A Brief History of Console Tables
Console tables remain a mainstay of homes throughout the world. First designed by French furniture makers in the early 18th Century, they remain as popular as ever in the 21st Century, perhaps especially so given the often reduced space available in modern homes.

Console Table Benefits
Best placed against a wall, perhaps with a large wall mirror behind it, a console table can radically change the focus of a living room or hallway, leaving an elegant air of versatility to the surroundings. If you would love a table in your living room but find the space is already owned by one or more sofas, a console table can often be an innovative solution.
The majority of modern console tables have built-in shelves which can be a great help in combatting the general paraphernalia of life. As well as being an attractive storage solution, a console table can also function as a stand-up desk, indeed several studies on productivity have espoused the virtues of stand-up desks versus traditional sit-down working arrangements!
Buyer's Guide
Always check if your dream console table comes preassembled - or if you have to assemble it yourself. The latter option is often the cheapest, and isn't too much of a stretch due to these not being full sized tables, putting together a small occasional console table should not take more than half an hour for one person.
Plus, of course, always ensure that there is enough space in your desired location to accommodate the console table you intend to buy. Even though you don't need enough room as a traditional table due to the lack of accompanying chair, you should ensure that there is enough space to open shelves, baskets, etc. - and there is room to walk past it if you opt to situate your console table in a hallway!
